Queen Mary Student Council ratifies historic motion

The Queen Mary Student Council last week ratified the motion passed at December’s Union General Meeting for the Student Union (QMSU) to express its solidarity with the oppressed Tamil people of Sri Lanka. With this motion, thought to be the first of its kind at a British student union, QMSU has taken up the responsibility to lobby the government and the EU to act immediately to resolve the human rights catastrophe taking place, as well as the academic departments of the university to engage in teaching and research into the history and politics of the conflict. It has also committed to increasing awareness of the situation on the island among its student community.Queen Mary is the third largest college of the University of London, with a population of 15,000 students.

QMSU now officially supports Students Against the Genocide of Tamils (SAGT) and Tamil Solidarity (TS).
